| Blumenauer Responds to Appeals Court Decision on Death With Dignity Act |
| Monday, 24 May 2004 | |
|
Washington, DC – Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) issued the following
statement reacting to the decision by a federal appeals court ruling protecting
Oregon’s Death With Dignity Act:
“This is a great victory for the people of Oregon who decided not once, but twice, that people should have the right to make personal end-of-life decisions without federal interference. The Attorney General’s continued efforts to make criminals out of doctors who help in these sensitive situations is one more signal that he is out of step with Oregonians.
“Every day people across the country struggle with these end-of-life decisions but Oregon is the only state that has protections and safeguards in place. Yet, our law is under attack from the U.S. Department of Justice. I’m pleased that the appeals court allowed our law to stand.” |
