Blumenauer Statement on DOJ Doubling Down on Failed War on Drugs

March 21, 2018

Washington, DC – Congressman Earl Blumenauer (OR-03) released the following statement on U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ letter instructing U.S. Attorneys to seek the death penalty for certain drug-related crimes:

“The War on Drugs has failed the American people. After more than 40 years of lives wasted and a trillion dollars spent, it’s past time we change our approach. Attorney General Sessions is hopelessly out of touch. Doubling down on horrific and discriminatory policies will worsen their impact on communities around the country, disproportionately devastating poor Americans and communities of color.

“The Attorney General’s directive does nothing to solve any of our underlying challenges. The administration should instead work with Congress to put in place a more just, humane, and cost-effective approach that prioritizes health and safety over harsh punishment.”
