BREAKING NEWS: The GOP still can’t govern

House Republicans today – in a desperate attempt to demonstrate that they are fiscally responsible – forced a vote on a “balanced budget” amendment. Rather than govern NOW, they’d prefer to handcuff the United States in the future.

The amendment comes on the heels of the GOP tax scam—the largest transfer of wealth in American history. The tax bill was so flawed that they couldn’t even risk having a hearing on it. They wrote it at the last-minute and changed provisions by the hour in a mad scramble for votes and special-interest support.

Republicans have the White House, the Senate, and the House of Representatives. If they actually want to produce a balanced budget, what’s stopping them?

It is poignant that the House is taking this up as Paul Ryan announces his retirement. Ryan (a man who railed about deficit spending on the Budget Committee) leaves as his legacy trillion dollar deficits as far as the eye can see, offering this amendment as a fig leaf – and as an excuse to justify slashing spending on Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and other programs that matter most to Americans.

By offering this amendment, the GOP is signaling surrender. They have been unable to budget responsibly, so they want to put it off for somebody else to deal with in the future.

This won’t work.

Courage,
