Families torn apart at the border
What is taking place at our southern border shocks the conscience: mothers desperate to protect their babies, children crying and scared, and families torn apart.
Trump and Jeff Sessions have doubled down on their anti-immigrant, xenophobic agenda with the administration’s new “zero tolerance” policy on immigration. The administration is criminalizing families who are fleeing abuse and violence and separating children as ICE detains or deports their parents.
This cruel and inhumane policy must be stopped. To help ensure that ALL immigrants are treated with dignity and that families stay united, I’ve joined my colleague Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard to introduce the Help Separated Families Act.
Additionally, as ICE enforces Trump’s heartless “zero tolerance” policy, 1,600 detainees are now being held in federal prison. This includes at least 123 people at Sheridan Federal Corrections Institution in Oregon, where it is reported that detainees are also being denied their fundamental right to legal counsel. In response, I’ve joined members of the Oregon delegation in demanding that ICE immediately change course and allow these individuals at Sheridan to access legal service providers through free telephone calls.
These are troubling times for our immigrant communities. The America we believe in stands as a beacon to those huddled masses yearning to breathe free. We can and should do better.
