The REAL National Emergency

Last week, Trump declared a national emergency for his fake crisis at the southern border, continuing to disregard the rule of law and the constitution. After failing to convince the American people to pay for his ineffective, wasteful, multi-billion-dollar concrete wall, he is now trying a desperate end-run around Congress. Members of both parties have expressed their strong opinion that there is no factual basis for this national emergency. In fact, border crossings are down to one-fifth of what they were in 2000, and apprehension of people trying to come into the country illegally are at their lowest level in more than four decades.

But Trump is making it clear that he thinks he, alone, has the power to make these decisions. He’s wrong in so many ways.

Our country is facing REAL emergencies, like climate disruption, gun violence, access to quality and affordable health care, and income inequality. Every day, we have constant reminders that temperatures are increasing and sea levels are rising, threatening more intense storms, floods, wildfires and drought. Saving the planet by dealing with climate change and carbon pollution is the most urgent issue of our age. This is the issue that must be addressed with action NOW, not a manufactured crisis at the border. That’s why I am introducing a congressional resolution to declare climate change a national emergency. I also voted with my colleagues for a resolution to uphold the constitution from Trump’s assault.

There is no room for the president to continue his temper tantrum just to fulfill a foolish campaign promise. The days of the House of Representatives turning its back to Trump’s antics are over. With Democrats in control, we will hold this administration accountable and defend our system of checks and balances. I will continue to fight with my colleagues to protect the rule of law from this delusional president’s brazen assaults and ensure that the will of the people is heard.

Courage,
Congressman Earl Blumenauer
