We need answers

July 18, 2020

Like many of you, I was appalled to see federal agents from the U.S. Border Patrol grabbing peaceful protestors off our Portland streets. This kind of lawless activity should alarm every single American.

We live in a democracy that does not operate solely on Trump's agenda. Peaceful demonstrators must be able to exercise their First Amendment right without fear of intimidation or harm.

This escalating and unwelcome presence of federal law enforcement in our cities is a serious threat that requires swift action. Yesterday, I joined Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden and Representative Suzanne Bonamici in demanding an Inspector General investigation into these incidents.

One thing is certain – we will not tolerate the use of Oregonians as props in Trump’s political games.

Yesterday, we also wrote to U.S. Attorney General William Barr and Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf demanding the immediate removal of federal forces from Oregon. And to prevent this type of occupation in the future, I’m working with Representative Ted Lieu of California on new legislation that we hope to unveil next week.

As we learn more about this evolving situation, I’ll be doing everything I can to ensure House leadership and all relevant committees are ready to do their part in stopping these outrageous abuses of power.
