Blumenauer and State Sen. Carter Denounce Proposal to Privatize Social Security
December 7, 2001
Press Release
Portland, OR- Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) and State Senator Margaret
Carter, who is also the President of the Portland Urban League, will be joined
by fifteen members of the Alliance for Retired Americans to highlight why
privatizing Social Security would jeopardize the quality of life for retired
Americans-particularly minorities and women.
On Tuesday, December 11, the Social Security Commission appointed by the Bush Administration plans to release an outline of three plans that would put Social Security at risk by: 1) reducing benefits; 2) raising the retirement age; and 3) not guaranteeing solvency. The proposal to privatize is irresponsible and would hurt the hard-working families that the program was designed to benefit.
