Blumenauer: “We have a Responsibility to Help Those Around the World Struggling to Lift their Communities Out of Poverty”
Washington, DC — Today, Congressman Blumenauer released the following statement:
“In our America, we have a responsibility to help those around the world struggling to lift their communities out of poverty. The United States has a proud history of helping the world's most vulnerable. I've led that work in Congress, increasing access to safe drinking water and sanitation by hundreds of millions of dollars. These efforts are critically important to saving lives, empowering women and children, preventing and mitigating conflict and human rights abuses, and even strengthening our own national security.
“This work is now threatened under the new Trump regime.
“Now more than ever, it is important to continue this work to help the poor. I'm in India this week to examine more closely issues that have global impact and consequences. From poverty and inequality, to how they address their energy and climate change commitments, and even terrorism, India is facing serious challenges. And in just over a decade, India will be the most populous country in the world. Meeting these challenges has implications for the United States and the entire world.”
