Congressman Earl Blumenauer Opposes PATRIOT Act Reauthorization

March 11, 2020
Press Release
Congressman Earl Blumenauer (OR-03), member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, opposed the reauthorization of the PATRIOT Act considered on the House floor today. He released the following statement:
“I have long opposed aggressive, sweeping surveillance powers authorized in Section 215 of the PATRIOT Act, which have time and again violated individuals’ constitutional rights. For months, I worked alongside Rep. Rashida Tlaib and my other colleagues in the Congressional Progressive Caucus to enact meaningful reform to this destructive policy. I appreciate the willingness to negotiate, and while this bill is ultimately an improvement, Congress is sacrificing the opportunity to create real reforms. For that reason, I will be voting NO on this legislation. Congress can and must do more to protect against intrusive abuse of our constitutional rights and ensure that the most marginalized and vulnerable communities are safeguarded, especially from this reckless administration. We must keep up the fight.”
