Key Congressional Democrat Visits Portland

Washington DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) will visit Portland on Tuesday, April 15th. DeLauro is a member of the House Appropriations Committee, the Committee in Congress responsible for setting funding priorities for the federal government. She is visiting Portland at the invitation of Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) to learn about the region’s federal funding needs.

DeLauro and Blumenauer will begin the day at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) where they will meet with OHSU officials and representatives from several social service agencies including the Women’s Health Center, Portland Relief Nursery, Friends of the Children, and New Avenues for Youth. DeLauro will be briefed on their missions, priorities and funding needs. DeLauro is a senior member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services and Education. The Subcommittee determines federal funding for scientific research, higher education, job training programs and social services among many other important government functions. From her position, DeLauro has championed increased funding for breast and cervical cancer screenings and research.

DeLauro will join Blumenauer for a helicopter tour of the Portland area to highlight the region’s transportation projects. Following the tour, she will visit the Pearl District to witness positive developments resulting from the streetcar project and learn about streetcar expansion plans. Time permitting she will ride a street car ride and visit Pearl Court.
